When Luna first meets Harry, she is in her fourth year of Hogwarts in Ravenclaw. Harry thinks she’s rather odd and uncool. She reveals that her dad is the editor of The Quibbler, and that she can see the thestrals, too. She tells Harry she believes in him, but is laughed at by the others, and is angered by Hermione’s insistence that the creatures she believes in do not exist. Hermione tells Harry that Luna tends to believe in anything that doesn’t have any proof. She is made the butt of jokes throughout the book. She attends the meeting to join Dumbledore’s Army and does so. She improves in Defense Against the Dark Arts thanks to Harry. Her dad publishes an article in The Quibbler giving the truth. Luna helps Harry when he has a dream where Sirius is being tortured in the Department of Mysteries. She comes up with the idea to ride the thestrals there. She helps Harry in the Department of Mysteries, and goes up in Harry’s estimation. She makes him feel better about Sirius’ death. Luna reveals that her mom died when she was nine.

Luna becomes closer to Ginny, and the others start to like her, maybe even consider her a friend, though Luna doesn’t feel like they’re really friends at the beginning of The Half-Blood Prince. Ginny defends her, and Ron compliments her. She does some rather amusing commentary at a Quidditch match, and later is one of the few D.A. members that fights in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. She attends Dumbledore’s funeral.

Luna attends Bill and Fleur’s wedding. She, along with Neville and Ginny, try to keep Dumbledore’s Army going. They tried stealing Godric Gryffindor’s sword, but got caught and sent into the Forbidden Forest as punishment. When they go to the Lovegood home, Luna is not there. She painted Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville on the ceiling of her room, along with the word ‘friends.’ They find out she’s being held. They find her in the cellar of Malfoy Manor, and Dobby helps her and the others escape before dying. She attended Dobby’s funeral and said some kind words. Luna stayed in Shell Cottage for a while, and received a new wand from Mr. Ollivander. Luna fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. Luna, Ginny, and Hermione fought Bellatrix Lestrange until Mrs. Weasley killed her. After they won the battle, Luna distracted people so Harry could have some time with Ron and Hermione. Luna isn’t mentioned in the epilogue, but J.K. Rowling said she married Rolf Scamander and had twin boys.

Character PERSONALITY:

What’s probably most obvious about Luna Lovegood when you first meet her is that she is a bit odd. In Order of the Phoenix, Harry says she has “protuberant eyes that gave her a permanently surprised look” and gave off “an aura of distinct dottiness.” It also doesn’t help that she has her wand tucked behind her left ear and is reading a magazine upside-down. She also wears strange jewelry- a necklace made of Butterbeer corks and earrings with orange radishes on them (later revealed to be called Dirigible Plums.) Luna is usually talking dreamily in the books, and tends to stare off into space or at people for too long.

It’s her odd behavior and beliefs that defines her for most of the students, who call her ‘Loony Lovegood’ throughout the books. She tends to stare at people when she’s curious about them, like when she stares at Harry when they first meet or when she stares at Ron after he tells the joke about Goyle. When he makes that joke, Luna bursts into laughter, laughing so hard that she’s gasping for breath, crying, and holding her sides. It’s a little awkward, and everyone laughs at the expression on Ron’s face. He asks her if she’s taking the mickey. She also remains rather dreamy and out-of-it in some stressful situations, such as when they were captured by the Inquisitorial Squad. Everyone else is struggling, but she’s staring off into space.

Luna lives in a strange-looking house, not far from the Burrow (the Weasley residence) with her father, Xenophilius Lovegood. At age nine, she lost her mother to a magical experiment accident, and saw her die. That’s why she can see the thestrals. She says she’s sad about it still, and that it was horrible to witness, but she’s got her dad. The Department of Mysteries, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and the Battle of Hogwarts changed Luna, for good or for worse. She starts to get less angry about people making fun of her or her beliefs, and more serious about doing the right thing and watching out for her friends.

One thing about Luna is that she has endless amounts of courage. She says it like it is, saying uncomfortable truths, such as that Ron is a bit mean in The Half-Blood Prince. She stands up for what she believes in, no matter what, such as in the Order of the Phoenix, when she thought the girls were laughing at her for saying she believed in Harry, she told them they could laugh, but his claims were as true as the creatures she believes in. She also willingly goes to the Department of Mysteries and battles Death Eaters, and at one point is dragging both Ginny and Ron along while single-handedly fighting off Death Eaters. She is also one of the only D.A. members to answer Harry’s plea for help in The Half-Blood Prince. In The Deathly Hallows, she is held captive. She escapes, and later goes back to Hogwarts to fight the final battle. She and Harry go on a dangerous mission to the Ravenclaw Tower, and she stuns one of the Carrows.

‘Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.’ It’s Ravenclaw’s motto, and Luna repeats it at one point. Luna, despite being quite strange, is quite intelligent. She is good at figuring out people, like when she points out that Ron’s a bit mean. She also invents things, such as her lion-topped hat or her eagle-topped hat. When she and Harry went to Ravenclaw tower in The Deathly Hallows, she was clever in her answer to the riddle to open the door. She also thought up the idea to ride the thestrals to the Department of Mysteries in The Order of the Phoenix. Luna seems to have an odd way of thinking, but that doesn't mean she's not intelligent. She is arguably just as intelligent as Hermione. She just thinks in a different way. She has illustrated throughout the book that she is highly intelligent.

Luna seems like she’d be indifferent to people, but she really does try hard to make friends. In fact, it seems like all she wants in the world is to be accepted and have friends. She seems delighted when people start standing up for her, or inviting her to parties like Harry did in The Half-Blood Prince. At the beginning of The Half-Blood Prince, she says she like Dumbledore’s army because it almost felt like she had friends. She does whatever it takes to protect the people she likes, including fighting multiple battles and going on dangerous missions. She seems to be very interested in Harry at the beginning, then slowly sees him as a friend instead of another creature to believe in. She thinks Ron is hilarious, but a little mean. They go on to have a mutual like for each other. She and Hermione bicker in the beginning over Luna’s beliefs, but they slowly bond and soon, the girls are affectionate with each other. Luna is also very good friends with Ginny and Neville, and bonds with Dean, Dobby, and Mr. Ollivander in the last book. In The Deathly Hallows, she painted the ceiling of her bedroom. On it are Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville, and they’re connected by the word ‘friends’ written over and over, obviously indicating that she considers them friends now. She even opens herself to ridicule by pretending to see a Blibbering Humdinger just so Harry can have some alone time after the Battle of Hogwarts. She cares about her friends most, and also her beliefs. She will protect her friends, and try to educate people and discover new things.

First PERSON:

[Luna smiles at the camera. It’s not a normal smile. It’s off, a little dazed almost, like she’s in a fog.]

Hello, fellow Transports. It isn’t so terrible here, you know. It’s better than the place I was at recently. Though I suppose those that aren’t used to being alone are quite lonely without their friends.

If you need me, I think I’ll go fishing for plimpies.

Third PERSON:

Luna wasn’t exactly thrilled to be in another world or time with another war. But this world was fascinating and new and Luna wasn’t going to let an opportunity just escape. It was still dark out for the most part, but there was enough light out that Luna would be able to see. She slipped out of bed and put on some galoshes over her shoes. She was already wearing shoes, but she needed protection in case she came across any dabberblimps. And, of course, she put on her Butterbeer cork necklace and her dirigible plum earrings. Nargles, you know.

She listened to her feet pat along down the street, putting her hood up to protect her hair from the sprinkling of rain. It always rained in Exsilium. She thought it fit the place. Goosebumps rose on her skin. She should have worn a jacket, but she’d been so intent on exploring the place when most others were asleep that she hadn’t thought of it. Luna didn’t mean to neglect herself. Some things were just more important.

When Luna looked up, she could have sworn she saw a sparkle. It had disappeared quickly. It could have been water reflecting the light straining to be known. But Luna knew better. No matter what other people said, she knew she was right. There was more than meets the eye, and Luna would do whatever she could to educate people. She was certain the United Earth was in league with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, after all.

They would see she was right. They would see the creatures, or find out that her and her father’s theories were correct, and then they would believe. They would believe in her, give her the credit she deserved… maybe even be her friend. It would all be worth it. All the name-calling, pranks, and insults would be worth it. One day, she wouldn’t be known as Loony. She would be Luna, and that would be enough for people. She smiled and started skipping down the street, chasing the sparkle into the morning.

I hope it’s okay if Luna makes up conspiracy theories about the United Earth fsdkjlsd
